How do I care for my sheepskin?

Our sheepskins are 100% natural, which means their natural properties are preserved. Thanks to the naturally occurring wool grease (lanolin), our sheepskin is self-cleaning. Lanolin helps prevent bacteria from taking hold. To help you enjoy your sheepskin for as long as possible, we’ve listed our tips below.

Sheepskin care

To keep your sheepskin clean, supple and fresh, it’s important to shake it out regularly and let it air. Washing a sheepskin is strongly discouraged: washing removes the lanolin (wool grease), and the hide can dry out hard and stiff.

To freshen the hide, you can hang it outside overnight — the moisture in the air helps revive it. Small “spots/dirt” can be dabbed clean with a lightly damp cloth, but make sure the leather side of the hide does not get wet.

To maintain its soft appearance, it’s important to brush the hide regularly — preferably using a wool comb.

Wash out a sheepskin?

We do not recommend washing a sheepskin. The reason is that if the leather side gets wet, it can dry out hard and stiff. If you do want to wash the hide, we recommend the washing instructions below.

Washing

  • Steam-clean using a detergent suitable for wool cleaning.
  • Hand-wash in cold water with, if needed, a very small amount of liquid (mild) detergent/soft soap.
  • Shake well to remove water; do not wring out.

Drying

  • The hide must absolutely not go in the tumble dryer!
  • After shaking it out, hang the hide up or dry it flat on a rack and stretch it regularly; this helps keep the leather side supple.
  • Do not dry the hide in sunlight or any other direct heat. Sudden temperature changes can cause the wool to shrink. Ideally, dry it in the shade on a breezy summer day so the wool stays beautifully supple.

Medical and/or babycare sheepskins

These hides can be washed — but please read the washing instructions for the hide first. Wash on a wool programme; you can use a small amount of wool detergent if needed. The drying process for these hides is the same as for sheepskins.

To keep your dyed hide looking beautiful, we recommend only brushing/shaking it out, or vacuuming if necessary — so always treat it dry. To prevent discolouration, we advise not placing these hides in direct sunlight.

Sheepskins are self-cleaning. How convenient is that!

Sheepskins are self-cleaning. Sheepskins contain wool grease, lanolin, which helps the wool naturally break down most substances, gives it a self-cleaning effect, and repels bacteria. Still, you do need to care for your sheepskin properly yourself. To maintain the best quality, we recommend airing your sheepskin outdoors for a few hours once every 2 months and shaking it out thoroughly. You can shake it out by hand or with a carpet beater. This greatly benefits the lifespan of your sheepskins.

Dirt and stains?

If there’s dirt in the sheepskin, it’s best to gently brush it out. Make sure the brush doesn’t have little balls on the ends of the bristles (as these could damage the sheepskin). If there is a stain on the sheepskin, try dabbing it carefully with a lukewarm soapy solution and a cloth. Use soft soap and not too much water.

Snow: a natural washing machine for a sheepskin!

Luckily, it still snows sometimes in our little cold country. Natural snow ultimately turns out to be the best cleaning agent for natural sheepskin. Take the sheepskin outside, sprinkle snow in and through the wool, and really rub it in well. Then lay the sheepskin wool-side down on the snow and leave it overnight. The next morning, shake the sheepskin out thoroughly — and as you can see, it’s been cleaned very well and is as good as new again. Just make sure you let the sheepskin dry properly afterwards. Here too, the more natural the better — so in the open air. We recommend leaving it outside to dry/air for 24 hours.

Can’t a sheepskin simply be washed in the washing machine?

No, unfortunately this is not good for a sheepskin. We therefore strongly advise against washing sheepskins and lambskins in the washing machine. Sheepskins do not cope well with moisture. It can affect the natural wool grease and therefore the condition of the wool. In addition, the felt/leather can be damaged because it may shrink during drying. So never put your sheepskin in the washing machine!
